Lesson Time Allocation

Our STEM lessons are designed to fit into a single class period, so each one takes 45 minutes. Any lesson can be extended by expanding the experiments and the student projects.

Introduction to the lesson

Overview

The lecturer welcomes the students and outlines the lesson, introducing its individual phases according to the pedagogical framework. The students introduce themselves to each other and share their expectations and needs, then complete the knowledge test.

Time allocation: 0–5 min.

Theoretical preparation

Overview

Theoretical preparation for the experiments and the students' independent work. The lecturer leads this phase and introduces the students to the learning objectives and the theory behind the chosen topic.

Time allocation: 10 min.

Experiment: hands-on preparation

Overview

Hands-on preparation for the students' independent work. The lecturer leads the experiments, and the students work on sample IoT projects on the lesson topic under the lecturer's guidance.

Time allocation: 10 min.

Apply: student projects

Overview

The students work in teams on IoT projects of their choice. The lecturer acts as a mentor and helps them choose their projects (taking into account their knowledge, skills and the time available). In their teams, the students design and build the projects and prepare presentations of them. If time is short, the Ideation method can be used in this phase.

Time allocation: 10 min.

Reflect: project presentations

Overview

The students present their IoT projects or ideas to the others. The lecturer and the other students evaluate the ideas critically and consider the significance of the project results and the lesson topics, and the role the Internet of Things plays in the real world.

Time allocation: 10 min.

Assessment and conclusion

Overview

The group gives verbal feedback on the presented projects. The lecturer sums up how well the learning objectives were met. The students take the knowledge test again and complete the 3-2-1 assessment.

Time allocation: 0–5 min.
